Why blood is stubborn (and the right order to attack it)

Step-by-step method

Set-in or dried blood stain

Dried blood isn’t hopeless — the plan is to rehydrate the protein, then digest it, and to give each step more time than a fresh stain gets. Start by scraping off the crust with a dull knife. Re-wet the mark with cold water and let it soften for several minutes, then apply an enzyme cleaner and let it dwell long — this is the step that clears most old blood, because the protease breaks down protein the peroxide-and-soap mix can only nibble at.
