How to Get Red Wine Out of Clothes
Blot off the excess, flush the stain from the back with cold water, and keep the garment away from hot water and the dryer until the mark is completely gone — heat sets red wine permanently. Then pretreat with a dish soap and hydrogen-peroxide mix (roughly three parts peroxide to one part detergent) on whites or colourfast fabric, spot-testing first because peroxide lightens colour, and finish any residual pink with an oxygen-bleach soak. Red wine is a two-part stain — a water-soluble anthocyanin pigment plus a tannin that grips the pigment to the fibre — which is why the order is fixed: flush the soluble colour out fast, oxidise the tannin-bound residue second, and apply heat only after the stain has gone. Skip the salt and the “pour white wine on it” tricks — the chemistry is against them.
Act fast: Blot up the wine with a clean cloth or paper towel — press, don’t rub, so you lift liquid instead of grinding pigment in. Turn the garment inside out and run cold water through the back of the stain to push the wine back out the way it came in. While it’s still fresh the anthocyanin pigment is water-soluble, so this cold flush alone removes a large share of it. The one thing that matters most in the first minutes: keep it cold. Hot water sets the tannin and locks the colour into the weave.
Don’t do this first: Don’t use hot water and don’t tumble-dry the garment to “check” the stain — heat sets the tannin and bakes the colour in for good. Don’t tip salt on it as your fix: salt is sodium chloride and it sets tannin stains, so beyond wicking a little fresh liquid in the first seconds it works against you. Ignore the “pour white wine over it” hack — it’s just more liquid with no chemical advantage over cold water, and it wastes the crucial first minute. Don’t rub hard (it abrades and spreads the stain), don’t reach for hydrogen peroxide or chlorine bleach on coloured or dark fabric without a spot-test (both lighten colour), and never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or vinegar — it releases toxic gas.
Check the fabric first
Read the care label before you commit — it decides whether you can soak and oxidise, or need to protect the fibre and hand it to a professional. Most everyday cotton and blends take the full treatment; the cautions are for delicates, protein fibres, and dry-clean-only garments.
- [Cotton / linen / colourfast blends] Full method is safe. These take the cold flush, the dish-soap-and-peroxide pretreat, and an oxygen-bleach soak well. On coloured cotton, spot-test the peroxide on a hidden seam first — it’s a mild bleach and can lift dye. Pure white, colourfast cotton can also take diluted chlorine bleach as a last resort.
- [Wool / silk / delicates] Gentle only — no oxygen bleach, no peroxide. Oxygen bleach and hydrogen peroxide can damage wool and silk (and their makers say not to use them on these fibres). Blot with cool water or club soda, dab a dried mark with a little glycerin to re-loosen it, and if the colour resists, stop and see a cleaner rather than risk the fabric.
- Dry clean only Don’t wet it. Blot off the excess and take it to a professional fast. Tell them it’s red wine — a tannin-and-anthocyanin stain — so they choose the right treatment instead of a water method that can leave a ring.
Whatever the fabric, pretest any peroxide, bleach, or solvent on an inconspicuous seam first, and stay inside the care label’s temperature limits.
Why red wine is stubborn (and the right order to attack it)
A red-wine stain isn’t one thing — it’s two working together, and what they are decides the order you treat them in:
- Anthocyanin (the red-purple pigment): the colour itself. While the stain is fresh this pigment is water-soluble, which is why a fast cold-water flush lifts so much of it. Leave it to dry and oxidise, though, and it shifts toward a stubborn blue-grey that water no longer touches.
- Tannin: the same compound that dries your mouth on a bold red acts as a mordant — it bonds the pigment to the fibre and holds it there. Like all tannin stains, it’s set by heat, so hot water, an iron, or a hot dryer turns a treatable mark permanent. Tannin also happens to be an antioxidant, which is exactly why an oxidiser (hydrogen peroxide or oxygen bleach) is what clears the bound residue.
That’s why order matters, and why single-move tips fall short. The reliable sequence is: flush the soluble pigment out with cold water first, then oxidise the tannin-bound colour with dish soap and hydrogen peroxide (or an oxygen-bleach soak), and apply heat only once the stain is completely gone. Cold water and no dryer throughout, so nothing gets set on the way.
Step-by-step method
- Blot up the excess — don’t rub. Press a clean cloth or paper towel onto the stain to lift as much wine as possible. Rubbing abrades the fabric and spreads the pigment sideways.
- Flush from the back with cold water. Turn the garment inside out and run cold water through the reverse of the stain so it pushes the wine back out, not deeper in. Cold, never hot — heat sets the tannin. Club soda works here too, but it’s doing much the same job as plain cold water.
- Pretreat with dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. On whites or colourfast fabric, mix about three parts 3% hydrogen peroxide to one part liquid dish soap or laundry detergent, spot-test it on a hidden seam, then work it into the stain and let it dwell 20–30 minutes. The peroxide oxidises the tannin-bound pigment while the detergent lifts it. Rinse with cold water. Skip this step on wool, silk, and dark or non-colourfast colours.
- Soak out the leftover colour with oxygen bleach. For any remaining pink or grey cast on colourfast fabric, soak the garment in an oxygen-bleach solution (per the package) for one to six hours — the full six for a stubborn or older stain. Oxygen bleach is safe on most colours, unlike chlorine bleach; check the care label and keep the water no warmer than the label allows.
- Launder as usual. Once the visible stain is gone, wash with your regular detergent in the warmest water the care label permits (warmer water only helps after the stain is treated out, never before).
- Air-dry and re-check. Before drying, inspect the stain in good light. If any colour remains, repeat from step 3 — do not machine-dry yet. The dryer’s heat is what turns a treatable wine stain permanent.
Household fix
Most red-wine stains are a cupboard job. The two workhorses are hydrogen peroxide (for the tannin-bound colour) and ordinary dish soap (to lift it). If you’re mid-dinner-party and want a holding move before you can treat properly:
- Cold water or club soda, right away: the single most effective thing on a fresh stain — it flushes out the still-soluble pigment before the tannin locks it down. Flush from the back, keep it cold, and don’t let the fabric dry until you can treat it.
- Dish soap + 3% hydrogen peroxide (3:1): the reliable at-home oxidiser for whites and colourfast fabric. Spot-test on dark or coloured items first — peroxide is a mild bleach and can lighten dye.
- The boiling-water pour (colourfast cotton and linen only): stretch the garment over a bowl and pour near-boiling water through the back of a fresh stain from a height. Heat plus pressure plus dilution sweeps the pigment out — but this works only on sturdy, colourfast cotton or linen. Never do it on wool, silk, synthetics, blends, or anything not colourfast: on those, the heat sets the tannin instead.
Two popular hacks worth a caveat: salt gets recommended constantly, but it’s sodium chloride and conservation guidance is blunt that it sets tannin stains — a dry pile can wick a little fresh liquid in the first seconds, but it’s no remover and shouldn’t sit on the fabric. And “pour white wine over red” is a myth: it’s just more liquid, with no chemistry that plain cold water doesn’t do better.
Product fix
If you’d rather buy the fix, match the product to each part of the stain:
- Enzyme liquid detergent or a pre-treat (Tide, Persil): work it directly into the stain and let it sit a few minutes before washing. For a set-in mark, the makers’ own recipe is three parts hydrogen peroxide to one part liquid detergent as a pretreat — and their shared warning is the one this page turns on: don’t dry the garment until the stain is completely gone, because heat sets whatever is left.
- Oxygen-bleach soak (OxiClean, Clorox 2, and similar): the best all-fabric tool for the residual colour. Dissolve per the label and soak the colourfast garment for one to six hours; safe on most colours. Note the maker’s exclusion list, though — not for wool, wool blends, silk, silk blends, leather, or dry-clean-only fabrics.
- A dedicated wine-stain remover (Wine Away and similar): a fine grab-and-go option to keep on hand, especially for parties. It’s convenient rather than magic — the household peroxide-and-detergent route does the same oxidising work — but a pocket-sized bottle beats scrambling for supplies mid-spill.
Honest take: you rarely need all of them. Cold water fast, then a dish-soap-and-peroxide pretreat, clears the large majority of red-wine stains on washable clothes; keep the oxygen-bleach soak in reserve for the last of the colour. Save chlorine bleach for pure-white, colourfast cotton only — never on coloured fabric, which it will ruin.
Set-in or dried red-wine stain
Red wine you find later — noticed the next morning, or pulled from the hamper — is harder but often still recoverable, as long as it hasn’t been through a hot dryer. The dried pigment has oxidised toward a blue-grey and the tannin has had time to bond, so stretch every step: re-wet the stain, work in the three-to-one peroxide-and-detergent pretreat, and give it an extended oxygen-bleach soak of several hours or overnight for colourfast fabric. Rinse cool, inspect, and repeat the cycle rather than reaching for heat. On delicates, a little glycerin worked into the dried mark first helps re-loosen the pigment before you rinse.
Be realistic if the garment has already been machine-dried: the heat has set the tannin, and a fully dryer-set red-wine stain often won’t come all the way out. It’s still worth one honest attempt — an overnight oxygen-bleach soak, a peroxide pretreat, then a cool wash — but if a faint shadow survives all that, it’s likely permanent, and further aggressive chemistry risks the fabric more than the stain.
